Re: balkan music & dance camp - who's going?
Thu, August 2, 2007 - 4:03 PMHave you been to previous ones? I looked all over the web site but couldn't get a good feel for the format. How much of each day is devoted to instruction? Is it possible to take many different instrument classes, or do they overlap one another? I couldn't find any kind of class schedule. Thanks. -

Re: balkan music & dance camp - who's going?
Sun, December 23, 2007 - 12:38 PMi applied for scholarship last year.....
i never went....
:(
there's always next year....
maybe if i try real hard, i can get work study.....
anyone have any experiences which contradict the image i get in my head of goofy white people trying to get culture? i totally admit im white too, but isn't it funny? i bet its ok, i wonder about the quality of instruction, or if they just cater to teaching basics to cultural "tourists" --maybe im just too bitter though because i didn't go!
:(
see you around

Mon, December 24, 2007 - 9:48 PMyes, goofy white people trying to get culture, but don't knock it 'til you've tried it! most of the folks there are seriously into balkan music and dance. it is a total immersion experience. you are living and breathing music for an entire week. it's really amazing. i hope you get to go next year! -

Thu, December 27, 2007 - 11:31 AMok ok! thanks-- really, i like being a goofy white guy, otherwise i'd feel bound to an indigenous culture, and i wouldn't be able to appreciate foreigners so much, eh? maybe i'll try to shove off next year. peace out

Re: balkan music & dance camp - who's going?
Fri, January 4, 2008 - 10:02 PMcamp is dorky and amazing at the same time in a wonderful way. every night there is a mountain of mostly blow your mind live music til dawn, and all day, if you can stay awake, you can be studying with good teachers. also, there is a ton of spontaneous playing by some honestly freakin amazing musicians who come to teach and also to just play music all day long with each other. Everyone is having an unabashedly wonderful time, and clearly happy to be surrounded by people who share their love of balkan music. it is worth it.

Re: balkan music & dance camp - who's going?
Sun, March 23, 2008 - 4:21 PMI went to the camp in mendocino last summer. It was awesome. I was the only beginner accordionist (meaning eveyone else had been playing for at least 5-7 years and I only had 6 months under my belt) but I still got sooo much out of it. I left the camp a better musician as well as having learned a lot of new material. Hears a tip. Bring a recording device. It's too much info at once to retain. I doubt I'll make it this year but deffinately will apply for the scholarships in the future.
