Paris, December 5th and 6th, 2009

You will learn the authentic gypsy dances with Simona Jovic, like they are danced in the romany celebrations !

We know very few things about those dances that the Roma are dancing with each other in the south of the Balkans. Hard to see on stage, they are oftenly replaced by fanciful dances with coloured skirts !
Far away from this, on this course, you will learn the authentic gypsy dances, like they are danced in the romany celebrations. No agitation, no jerky move of skirts, no cry. A controlled dance, noble and graceful, expressing a great joy, but soberly ! Accompanied by her romany musicians, Simona Jovic will make you travel in the heart of the gypsy traditions of the Balkans ! Not to be missed !

Price : one day : 65 € / two days : 120 €
Location : Studio Blanca Li, 7 rue des Petites Ecuries, 75010 Paris

Simona Jovic'es short biography:

Grown in Serbia, Simona Jovic has lived in the romany culture since her childhood. Her dance originates from the gypsy traditions of her country, from the parties and the weddings she had attended to since her childhood, and which had became her greater dance school !
Since her early age, Simona Jovic has been interested not only in the romany dance of the Balkans, but also in the variety of gypsy dances all over the world. She has undertaken an exceptional anthropological trip leading her within the world, in the heart of the nomad traditions of Asia, Africa, Europe and America.
This work of transcribing oral memory and its handling down have propelled her quickly on international stages. She performs with her romany musicians from the Balkans, and together they make discover the wealth of their culture, of their songs and dances. This collaboration had been followed since 2007 by the director Bruno Decharme, and the result is the « Arakhipena » movie, that will be released in 2010. Simona Jovic has been called several times by the romany and international press « the Romany Ambassador » and the « International number one of the gypsy dance ».

I inform you that another summer intensif rroma dance workshop will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in august 2008:

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.

I live in Portland Ore. I'm a fan of E. European music. I have a leaning towards the Balkans, so former Yugoslavia (I spent a year living there and have visited since, plus I have some of the blood in my veins) and Bulgaria. I've heard some Romanian and Albanian music that I've enjoyed too. BTW, if anyone wants a good CD recommendation, the Rough Guide to the Music of the Balkans is great. I'll be checking out their CDs covering Russia and Eastern Europe, too.

Here in Portland there is a group that performs Balkan music weekly at a pizza place. Lots of great music and open dance.

I know that this is technically Central Europe, but the Warsaw Village Band's CD "People's Spring" is great. I just picked it up.

I also listen to some of the popular music from Eastern Europe. I didn't care for the song that won Europvision this year, but it was by a Ukrainian woman (forgot her name). The runner-up was much better. His name is Željko Joksimoviæ.

Anyway, good to be in the Tribe.

P.S. I have also heard of Kitka. They are good. I wish I could find their CDs at a reasonable price.

In a few weeks, i am going to India, where I will be meeting nomad kalbeliya families. This time our Organization would need clothes for children, especially very small children. So please, if you have anything to give, we would be happy to take it to India. I will be in Paris until January 9th, so for those who live in Paris, somebody from the Organization would come to pick up the staff. And for the others, there is a possibility to send it. For those who are already in India, I will be performing in New Delhi (January 10th and 11th) and Orissa (January 12th) before going to Rajasthan (Jan. 14th), so if you wish to help, please contact me as soon as possible so that we can arrange a meeting.

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the luxuries of Saratoga Springs Resort, nestled just over 2 hours north of both San Francisco and Sacramento in 260 private acres of forest. Miles of hiking trails with breathtaking views of nearby Clearlake and access to natural mineral springs, surround a pair of lodges with both indoor sleeping accommodations and clean camp grounds, complete with a spacious pool and large jacuzzi. All meals are provided by our professional chef and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the immaculate Heart Lodge, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

Ultimately, Kosmos is both a school of music and dance, as well as an unforgettable celebration among friends. It is a special getaway where people bond their passions and talents. We hope you join us and help create a unique community that we all can cherish in the years to come.

02/12/07 Mon @ The Attic - Santa Cruz, CA

While most progressive minded bands (for lack of a better term) pride themselves in mixing and matching unrelated musical genres together, Santa Cruz's Estradasphere take it a step further by inventing and then naming entirely new hybrid styles! Among the crossbreeds slated for inclusion in 2006's Palace of Mirrors: "Romanian Gypsy Death Metal," "Spaghetti Eastern," "Bulgarian Surf," and damn it if these outrageous cocktails aren't masterfully realized in the likes of "Smuggled Mutation," "Six Hands," and "The Terrible Beautypower of Meow," respectively. Also to be found on this wild ride of an album are the industrial noises of "The Unfolding Pause on the Threshold," the beautifully arranged soft jazz of "The Debutante," the far-Eastern-funk-video-game-jingles of "Those Who Know," and symphonic orchestrations both lush, stately and relaxed (see the title track), and swinging, strutting, pouncing and lounging like a Monty Norman Orchestra James Bond theme (see "Colossal Risk"). Elsewhere still, the nightmarish "Flower Garden of an Evil Man" comes off all growling bass and ominous tones, while "Palace of Mirrors Reprise" wafts from polka, to circus music, to music box lullabies, to haunted castle organ music, and, finally, "Corporate Merger" trades in keening Arabic violins for metallic blastbeats and heavy electric guitars during a cathartic finale that's pure post-Mahavishnu (mountain-toppling closer "The Return" is even more intense in that last regard). Oh yeah, and all this without a word -- Estradasphere have gone instrumental on the whole of Palace of Mirrors, which winds up shining an even brighter spotlight on their impeccable and astounding musicianship.

Our current space is at 110 Capp St. For more info about us check out our tribe page. There are some Balkan music specialists organizing this event. DJ Zeljko will be mixing Balkan music from Saban Baramovic to Boban Markovic. Part of the funds raised will go to help the Hleb i Sir Cirkus (Bread and Cheese Circus) who go to Kosovo and make free circus shows for Serbian and Roma refugee children. Next summer they will go on their 5th annual trip to Kosovo.
KULTUR SHOCK CD RELEASE PARTIES

Seattle's Kultur Shock will be in town to celebrate the release of their new cd "We Came Take Your Jobs Away" at SF's Bottom of the Hill on Thursday, Sept. 28. This show will kick off the official release of their new cd, entitled "We Have Come to Take Your Jobs Away". While the album officially hits the streets on October 10, copies will be available at the show.

Consisting of members from Bosnia, Bulgaria and Japan(!), they have been described by UK Metal Hammer Magazine as "the very model of a m!ulti-cultural punk rock band, just your everyday American-Japanese Spanglish Balkan Mariachi punk rock band." and SF's Bay Guardian as "the real deal."

Kultur Shock was formed in 1998 by Gino Yevdjevich, a Sarajevo refugee who emigrated to Seattle one year earlier. They released their first album "Live in Amerika" in 1999, and via SF's Jello Biafra, was introduced to Faith No More's Billy Gould, who then produced their two subsequent albums "FUCC the INS" (2001) and "Kultura Diktatura" (2004) and released them on his SF based indie label Koolarrow Records. The band has 5 European tours under their belt, and this SF appearance is one of a series of cd release parties that will be taking place in San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland.

Opening will be SF favorites La Plebe, the Mission District's hardest working, beer guzzling "barrio street punk with horns outfit". Fresh back from their Balkan tour (Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia, Serbia), they have returned home tighter than ever and with an increased tolerance for alcohol and cucumber salads.
I play several different types of flutes and have been interested in learning the kaval for years. I've finally got more spare time, & want to purchase a kaval as soon as I can to begin learning this amazing instrument! I can't seem to find a place to purchase one where I can trust that the quality will be professional, in tune, etc. though.

Where or from who would you recommend purchasing a very good quality kaval? Also, what is the price range for these instruments?

I've seen kavals for sale on Ebay, but not very much elsewhere, & I don't know how these instruments play. I definitely want to find something I can play for years to come! :)
Laibach--I've loved them since I was 15! A friend of mine introduced me to their music. I was taking German at the time and their German language songs interested me. When I found out they were from Slovenia (at the time it was said they're from Yugoslavia), of course I had to find out all about where they came from! I think their lead singer Milan Fras is drop dead gorgeous! Of course learning about that region of the world exposed me to:

Dino Merlin--His voice is so beautiful and it is easy to get lost in that voice!

Zeljko Joksimovic---He is GORGEOUS!!! He has a sexy voice too. But damn is he nice to look at. Will he be a rival to Milan Fras in my heart? *snicker* =P

Ivana Banfic---She has a nice voice and her tunes are quite catchy. =)

Ceca--She has a lovely, husky alto voice. She's beautiful. I'm not too keen about the fact that she is Arkan's widow, but I like her as a musician.
SEATTLE’S KULTUR SHOCK AND SAN FRANCISCO’S LA PLEBE MIX IT UP FOR A SPECTACULAR CLASH OF CULTURE AND SOUND!!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 24
SF’S BOTTOM OF THE HILL

After turning heads and blowing minds during last month's two night stint at Slim’s with Gogol Bordello, this show marks Kultur Shock triumphant return to San Francisco to play their particular brand of aggressive Balkan music at The Bottom of the Hill. Consisting of members from Bosnia, Bulgaria and Japan(!), they have been described by UK Metal Hammer Magazine as “the very model of a m!ulti-cultural punk rock band, just your everyday American-Japanese Spanglish Balkan Mariachi punk rock band.” The fact is, they’re all that, but louder.

This is their last scheduled appearance before the release of their upcoming album "We Have Come To Take Your Jobs Away", due for release September 2006.

Co-headlining this event will be local favorites "La Plebe", the Mission District's hardest working, beer guzzling "barrio street punk with horns outfit". With three cds under their belt (“Conquista 21”, “Exploited People”, and “Entre Cerveza, Ritmo y Emocion”) they have made a name for themselves as a pure-hearted punk band who’s well known for their legendary shows, relentless West Coast touring (including full 3 tours of Mexico) , and invaluable contribution to the local music community. This will be their last SF show before they embark on their 2006 "Sin Fronteras" Tour (trans: "Without Borders") of the Balkans (Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania and points in between). In fact, May 24 marks the kickoff for the tour, which officially begins the following morning.

Opening the show will be Fuga, formed in 2000 in El Paso, Texas and have since relocated to the SF Bay Area. Thier dedication to social and political issues permeates throughout their lyrics expressing a sense of hope.creating passionate uplifting music for the growing bilingual population.

IT DOESN’T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS…AND IT’S ALL AGES!!

Thank gawd for folk dancers. A lot of folk dancer troupes have these massive databases on well-designed websites with staggering amounts of free MP3s and sheet music of folk music from all over the world. My hard drive is bulging obscenely with the fruits of recent discoveries; two websites alone have given up at least hundreds of songs from Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Armenia and Albania. The beauty of it is, a lot of it is from old 78s that were rare even the day they were released ... now, they're downright priceless ... Sure, there's probably gross copyright infringement taking place somewhere here, but, without this kind of ethereal electronic storage and universal access, a lot of these recordings would just disappear between the microscopic grooves of vinyl discs that molder in attics and the backrooms of thrift stores.

This Thursday, March 2, at 7:30 pm, a very talented group of Juilliard students will perform music by Balkan and Norwegian composers inspired by the folk music of both regions at Scandinavia House in Manhattan. This concert explores musical and historical connections between Norway and the Balkans with lively, inspiring music evoking the fiery temperament and unpredictable rhythms of Balkans as well as beautiful images of the Norwegian landscape. The program includes music by Balkan composers (Grgin, Zlatan, and Vauda) and Norwegian composers (Grieg, Tviett, and Gjeilo) inspired by the power of folk music. The five musicians involved in this project - Vasko Dukovski, Ismail Lumanovski, Ola Gjeilo, Sanja Petricic, and David Coucheron - are classically trained but also specialize in folk music.

Tickets are $15. Please email me or call me at (212) 847-9717 if you’d like to make reservations.

I've always been into the horn driven styles (being a trumpeter) so have been getting into goran bregovic, mahala rai banda, kocani orkestar and the clubbed out gear that's coming via shantel, balkan beatbox, electric gypsyland, shazalakazoo, rambo amadeus, prti beegee, wikluh sky and so on...

Any readers of the group have recommendations about balkan artists to check out - traditional and modern?

One of these tunes got played at the club on xmas eve (which made me happy). Check the links... One is a mash up of Goran bregovic's mesecina + the other is unidentifiable by me, so any pointers/tips welcome.

I am working on a plan to promote indie-artists and bands in India - through various channels like direct marketing & club representation, etc. I am mostly looking at direct sales for CDs (min. 1000 pieces) through a well-knit network of music lovers, which I am in the process of developing. Basically I am open to any genre - which sounds good but is not commercial and yes, eclectic - becoz Indian music lovers are opening to new sounds. We'll rest market in Clubs & then sell to a captive database of music afficianados in major Indian metros. Anybody who has or knows someone with great music to share - and who wants to capture the big Indian market, pls reply to me with details. U can send me ur website, clips, bios etc on parvezagm23@yahoo.co.in

P.S: There are also offers for a few live gigs at select 5star hotels in the holiday (if u happen to be visiting India) season.
